Chair of the Dutch National Climate Citizens’ Assembly appointed

From
June 6, 2024

The Dutch Nationaal Burgerberaad Klimaat took a step forward with the appointment of Nienke Meijer as its Chair. She will begin her work on 1 July 2024. She was chosen partly because of her extensive administrative experience and active role in social organizations. In response to her appointment, she said:

“Climate change affects us all. It is therefore important that we think together about solutions to combat this. As chair of the Nationaal Burgerberaad Klimaat, I am really looking forward to guiding the discussions about this, so that everyone's voice is heard and we can convert all creative ideas into good advice.”

The independent Chair is important because she is the figurehead and forms an important link between the assembly, parliament and the government. The Chair also monitors the quality of the process. She will be supported in her work by a secretariat of the independent Consultative Body for the Physical Environment (OFL).

The Burgerberaad Klimaat will bring together 175 Dutch people chosen by democratic lottery who will meet six times over six months. It will discuss how we can eat, travel and use things in the Netherlands in a way that is better for the climate. The plan is for the assembly to begin its work at the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025.
